Knox Service Awards Recipients
James R. Bowman, '48
James R. Bowman graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Knox in 1948, following service in the Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He then completed a master's degree at the University of Minnesota, as well as a degree in library science. Now retired, he spent his entire working career at the Library of Congress as an editor of the National Union Catalog. He has participated in the Washington DC Knox Club, organized activities for his class's 50th reunion, and helped the Alumni Office update its mailing lists, so that alumni can be invited to homecoming and other activities. He has endowed the James R. Bowman Book Fund, to support acquisitions by Seymour Library. A native of Knox County, Illinois, he also has been active in the preservation of the old Courthouse in Knoxville.William J. Foley, '38
A life long resident of Galesburg and a business leader in the community since his graduation in 1938, William J. Foley has always been close to Knox College. He served from 1963 to 1965 as the Alumni Council President. He also has been active in community service organizations and received a Knox Alumni Achievement Award in 1969. Among his most lasting impressions are those made through the use of his professional photographic skills. In the 1970s he established a summer camp at Knox teaching basic photographic skills to young people. Even though he is now retired from the photography business, he's usually packing a pocket camera and continues to supply the Fifty Year Club Bulletin with dozens of candid snapshots from FYC events.James T. Poor, '54
After his graduation from Knox in 1954, James T. Poor served in the U.S. Army until 1956. He started with Commerce Publishing Company in St. Louis as an assistant editor, eventually rising through the ranks to become the firm's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He has donated countless volunteer hours to Knox, including the Knox-Lombard Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee, as a class agent, and as chairman of the Annual Fund. He also has been an active alum with his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. In addition, he has worked with the Admission Office to recruit prospective students, and with the Career Development Center on job-search related activities for current students.Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college, located in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,200 students from 45 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
