Hearst Foundation Establishes Endowed Scholarship at Knox College

The William Randolph Hearst Foundation has awarded Knox College in Galesburg Illinois, a grant of $100,000 to establish the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund. This fund will provide scholarship support to students of color pursuing degrees in teacher education.

"The education of our children is the key to our future. Students preparing to teach in the nation's schools need support on all levels, including financial, in order to be encouraged to go into the classroom," said Knox President Richard S. Millman.

"The new William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund will be of direct tangible assistance to generations of Knox students as they prepare to enter into one of the country's most important and under-appreciated professions," Millman said.

The late publisher and philanthropist William Randolph Hearst established the two Hearst Foundations in the 1940s. Today, their assets are estimated to be worth more than $1 billion. Last year, the Foundation awarded more than $40 million in grants in four major areas -- education, health, social service, and culture.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,220 students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
