Knox Athletes Volunteer in Grade School

Knox athlete Chris Miles reads to grade school kidsThirty-two Knox College student-athletes recently volunteered in various capacities at Hedding Grade School in Abingdon, Illinois. Members of the Prairie Fire football, baseball, women's soccer, men's and women's track, men's and women's basketball, softball, volleyball and men's golf teams participated.

The Knox students were paired and assigned to one of 16 classrooms. They volunteered from 9:45-11:15 a.m. and led activities ranging from reading a story to helping the grade-school children with a project. One baseball and one softball player were asked to go to the physical education classes helped teach a unit on baseball/softball. The fifth-grade classes had the Knox students come and speak on the subject of being a good student and being a good sport.

Founded in 1837, Knox is an independent, four-year, liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with 1,220 students from 47 states and 41 nations. Knox's "Old Main," a National Historic Landmark, is the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
