a. "CATCH" RECEPTION IS JAN. 12
Come to the CATCH reception Friday, Jan. 12 at 4 p.m. in the CFA lobby.
Pick up your copy of CATCH, Knox's award-winning literary magazine, and
hear students read from their work. Refreshments will be served.

b. CLASSICAL SAXOPHONE RECITAL IS JAN. 13
Saxophonist John Vana will perform a selection of classical works for
the saxophone at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 in Kresge Hall, Ford
Center for the Fine Arts. Jenny Perron will accompany him on piano.
  Vana is associate professor of music at Western Illinois University.
He has performed and presented master classes throughout the U.S. and in
Canada and Taiwan. Vana has presented world premiere works of well noted
composers, including Pulitzer prize winning John Harbison and
composer/jazz historian Gunther Schuller.  He received his master's
degree in saxophone performance from the University of Michigan.

c. YI REN QIGONG CLASSES BEGIN JAN. 14
Sundays 5:45 to 7:00 PM beginning January 14, 203 GDH
Classes are free to members of the Knox College and Galesburg area
community.  However, class size is limited.
No special clothing or equipment is needed.
Yi Ren Qigong is a system of exercises based on Taoist practices for
health and longevity.  "Qi" is the Chinese word for life energy.  "Gong"
is the Chinese word for exercise/practice.
Qigong is not rigorous exercise and is appropriate for all age levels,
body types, and range of mobility and flexibility.
This is a beginning level course that requires no previous qigong
experience.  Course participants will learn exercises to be used in
daily practice.  We will begin by learning to feel our bodiesÕ qi and
learning to relax.
About the instructors:  Karen Gourd and David Gourd have both studied
for several years with Sun Guan Cheng, the developer of Yi Ren Qigong.

f. UPS RATES TO INCREASE FEB. 5
   ---from Neill Unger
UPS has announced an increase in rates effective February 5, 2001. Rates
on domestic air shipments will increase 3.7%, while domestic ground
shipments will increase 3.1% with residential shipments increasing an
additional $.05 per package. The fuel surcharge of 1.25% will remain in
effect. Federal Express has announced a 4.9% increase in domestic rates
effective February 1, 2001. Fuel surcharges totaling 5.5% will remain in
effect.

g. EMERGING LEADERS WORKSHOP TO BE HELD

The Knox College Emerging Leaders was founded in 1997 and will be
facilitating its fourth set of leadership development workshops during
the Winter and Spring terms of 2001.  The vision of Emerging Leaders is
to foster an environment where college students can develop, refine, and
apply leadership skills such as effective communication, analytical and
critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, confidence building
and assertive training;  therefore promoting "the best of them" in the
Knox Community and in their respective communities.

h. DISPLAY OF VINTAGE CLOTHING IS JAN. 19-20
Knox student, Nikki Maritch has put together a display of vintage
clothing that would have been worn on the RMS Titanic. This project was
done as part of an independent study.

TIME: Friday 10-4 6-9 Saturday 10-4
 The event is free and open to the public. There will be one hundred
pieces of vintage clothing from the era of the Titanic.

i. FIELD STATION INFORMATIONAL MEETING IS JAN. 11

There will be a meeting to discuss the Wilderness Field Station summer
2001 program at 4 p.m. on Thursday Jan. 11 in the Common Room.  If you
are interested in attending the WFS, come to this meeting.  I will
discuss the program and answer your questions about the WFS.  I will
show some video footage of the WFS.  We will have some Knox alums of the
program there to give a student perspective of the program.  Also,
please note that two people from Knox will be offering courses at the
WFS this summer ? Rick Ortner will be teaching Landscape Painting and
Melissa Helquist will be teaching Nature Writing.  If you can't make the
meeting or have questions before the meeting, please contact me (Stuart

j. OAK RIDGE LABORATORY INFORMATIONAL MEETING IS JAN. 11

There will be an informational meeting about the Off-Campus study
opportunities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Argonne National
Laboratory this Thursday, January 11, at 7p.m. in SMAC room D108.  This
program has been very popular with Knox students from the sciences,
including Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Physics, Computer Science,
and Math.  The ORNL Science Semester program has an early deadline:
final applications, which include letters of recommendation and essays,
must be to the program advisor (Andrew McDowell) by January 24.  See the

k. RUSSIAN TABLE TO MEET FRIDAYS
Russian Table will take place each Friday of Winter Term at 12:00 noon
in the Caf. Russian table will not meet on March 9.

l. NSEP SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE JAN. 15
Just a reminder that NSEP scholarship applications are due in the office
of Off-Campus Study (room 14, old jail) by January 15 at 5:00 p.m.  All
applicants must be interviewed on campus and then their applications
forwarded to Washington. Applications are still available in the
off-campus study office.   A description of the scholarship follows:
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR OVERSEAS STUDY
Major scholarships are available for 2000-2001 for students interested
in study in China, the Czech Republic, Japan, Tanzania and Russia.
Students making strong cases for support may also be eligible for
scholarships for study in Costa Rica, Zimbabwe, India and Argentina.
These scholarships carry a service component with them - recipients must
be willing to work for the government for the same amount of time that
they studied abroad.
These awardsÑthe National Security Education Program ScholarshipsÑoffer
recipients up to $8,000 per semester (or $16,000 per year).  The campus
deadline for applying is January 15, 2001.  For applications see Karen

m. APPLICATIONS FOR OFF-CAMPUS STUDY ARE DUE FEBRUARY 5;
INFORMATIONAL MEETING IS JAN. 15
There will be an information session to assist students in completing
the Knox portion of the off-campus application as well as the program
specific application.   If you have questions or just want to simplify
the task, please come to the information session on Monday, January 15,
at 7 p.m. in the new off-campus study house located at 542 South West
Street.

n. "COMMON ROOM SEEKING ESSAYS"
Knox's online journal of literary criticism, "The Common Room," is
seeking essays for publication.  Submissions are welcome at any time,
but those received by Monday, Jan. 29, will be considered for the next
issue.
Essays should be
--a piece of literary criticism from any disciplinary area
--written by a Knox student
--5-25 pp. long (typed and double-spaced)
--in hard copy form
--documented with Works Cited page

o. NEW LEAGUES HAVE BEEN FORMED FOR INTRAMURAL SPORTS
IM Basketball begins Tuesday, January 16.  There is a new women's
league.  Sign-up deadline is Friday, January 12.
IM Indoor soccer begins Monday, January 14.  There is a new Just for Fun
league as well as the old A-competitive league and the B-Co-ed league.
Sign-up deadline is Wednesday, January 10.
IM Volleyball begins Wednesday, January 16.  Registration deadline is
Friday, January 12.
Entry forms are located on the IM Board in Seymour and in the

q. SUBMIT APPLICATIONS FOR INDEPENDENT MAJORS

Applications for Independent Majors should be submitted at least six
weeks before the end of the sophomore year and in no case later than the
end of the second term of the junior year.  See Knox Catalog, page 166.

r. APPLICATIONS DUE FOR OFF-CAMPUS STUDY
Applications for off-campus study programs are, with a very few
exceptions, due on February 5.  Program-specific application materials
are available from faculty program advisers (see the Knox Catalogue).
Students also need to complete Knox-specific application materials.
These materials should shortly be available on the Knox web page under
"Off-Campus Study;" hard copies of these materials are also available
from faculty program advisers and in the Off-Campus Study Office (Old
Jail, Room 14).  If you have questions, contact Karen Hawkinson at

s. FEMALE ADMISSION SUITE POSITION OPEN
As an Admission Suite host, your job is to insure that guests of Knox
College have a good overnight visit, feel welcome, receive adequate
information about Knox to meet their needs, and receive the kind of
individual attention that is the hallmark of our institution.  Overnight
visits are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday nights from the
first through the ninth week of the term.  There is a $150.00 stipend
per term, which is paid at the end of the term.
   If you are interested in applying for the position please come by the
Admission Office in CFA to pick up an application and full job
description.  All applications should be returned by Friday January 12,
2001.  Interviews will be scheduled the following week.  If you have any

t. INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The Galesburg Downtown Council is offering a single non-paying (for now)
internship for someone interested in downtown and streetscape

u.  STUDENT SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE
Student summer research fellowship (4 available for Summer 2001)  The
Environmental Studies Program is excited to announce to students the
availability of four summer research fellowships for 2001.  Under the
direction of a Knox faculty mentor of the studentÕs choosing, fellowship
recipients will conduct a 10-week research project at Knox College
during Summer 2001. While some of the research may be done outside of
Knox College, the vast majority of the 10-week period should be spent at
Knox.  A stipend of $3,000 is provided as well as an equipment budget
normally not exceeding $1,000 to each fellow.  Each fellow will be
eligible to apply for summer room monies through Richter funds. Each
awardee is required to prepare a paper upon completion of the 10-week
summer research term. The monies for the stipend and the equipment
budget are provided through the Knox Environmental Studies Initiative
Grant received from the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation.
Applications (which will include a projected equipment budget)can be
picked up from the department chair, Peter Schwartzman, and can be
received via hard copy or email.  Applications also require a letter of
support from the faculty mentor who will be overseeing the research
project. Requirements: sophomore standing as of Feb. 1st, 2001. Fellows
will be selected on the following basis:  (a)  demonstrated competence
to carry out project including evidence of preparation; (b) likelihood
of successful completion; and,(c) ENVS relevancy.   DEADLINE:  Completed
applications are due by March 1st, 2001 at 5 PM.  (Awardees will be
determined and announced the first week of the Spring 2001 term subject
to the approval of the review committee.)

v. CAMPUS ACTION GRANTS AVAILABLE
 Campus Action Grants  (several available for remainder of 2000-2001
academic year, ending 6/1/2001)  The Environmental Studies Program is
excited to announce to students the availability of several campus
action grants for the remainder of the 2000-2001 academic year.  These
grants are designed to encourage students to develop environmental
awareness activities, including but not limited to: outreach programs to
precollege students in Galesburg, organizational studies related to
making Knox a "greener" campus, and, educational events for KnoxÕs
community.  Grants are expected to pay for items including, yet not
limited to, publicity materials, refreshments, educational supplies, and
speakers.  Groups grants are not expected to exceed $500 and individual
grants are not expected to exceed $150.
Successful grant awards will be given on a first-come, first-served
basis.  One group grant will be reserved for a group that plans an Earth
Day event.  The monies for these grants are provided through the Knox
Environmental Studies Initiative Grant received from the Rockefeller
Brothers Foundation.  Applications (which will include an estimated
budget) can be picked up from the program chair, Peter Schwartzman, and
can be received via hard copy or email.   DEADLINE: Completed
applications are being accepted and considered on a continual basis
starting January 15, 2001. (Awardees will be determined and announced
within a week of the receipt of the application subject to the approval
of the review committee.)

w. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP GRANTS AVAILABLE
Community Partnership Grants (several available for remainder of
2000-2001 academic year, ending 6/1/2001)
 The Environmental Studies Program is excited to announce to students
the availability of several community partnership grants for the
remainder of the 2000-2001 academic year.  These grants which will
normally not exceed $1,000 are designed to encourage students to work on
environmental problems in Galesburg and surrounding areas.  Working
together, Knox students and community leaders will develop and implement
solutions to environmental problems that students have identified.
Possible projects might include a campaign to encourage homeowners to
properly dispose of hazardous materials, activities surrounding Illinois
tree-trimming practices, research and communication on local public
transportation, surveying of local home owners, and the clean-up and
preservation "green" space in Galesburg. The monies for these grants are
provided through the Knox Environmental Studies Initiative Grant
received from the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation.  Students interested
in participating in this program should contact the department chair,
Peter Schwartzman, as soon as possible. Applications (which will include
an estimated budget) can be picked up from the program chair, Peter
Schwartzman, and can be received via hard copy or email.   DEADLINE:

Environmental Studies Program is excited to announce to faculty the
availability of a summer research fellowship for 2001. Knox faculty
seeking to expand or redirect their scholarship to areas relating to
environmental studies and/or forge new interdisciplinary partnerships
with the Knox environmental studies program are encouraged to apply.  A
stipend of $4,000 is provided through the fellowship. The awardee is
required to produce an final report focusing on how the fellowship
impacted their teaching and furthered the Knox Environmental Studies
program. The monetary support for the fellowship is provided through the
Knox Environmental Studies Initiative Grant received from the
Rockefeller Brothers Foundation.  Applications can be picked up from the
program chair, Peter Schwartzman, and can be received via hard copy or
email.   DEADLINE:  Completed applications are due by March 1, 2001.
Joint applications will be considered. (Awardees will be determined and
announced the first week of the Spring 2001 term subject to the approval
of the review committee.  Comments and suggestions for alternative
funding sources will be provided to all applicants.)

y.  FACULTY TRAVEL GRANTS AVAILABLE
Faculty Travel Grants (several available for remainder of 2000-2001
academic year, ending 6/1/2001)
 The Environmental Studies Program is excited to announce to faculty the
availability of several, faculty travel grants for the remainder of the
2000-2001 academic year.  These grants are designed to enable faculty to
retool teaching methods and research skills at workshops, conferences,
or site visits to other institutions. Additionally, grants may be
provided to projects that allow recipients to fortify and expand
programs and offerings in ENVS at Knox College. Interested faculty from
all disciplines are encourage to apply. Each grant will normally be no
more than $500.  The monies for these grants are provided through the
Knox Environmental Studies Initiative Grant received from the
Rockefeller Brothers Foundation.  Interested faculty should submit a
request (not more than one page in length) outlining his/her plans (with
a estimated itemized budget) to the program chair, Peter Schwartzman.
DEADLINE:  Completed applications are being accepted and considered on a
continual basis starting February 1, 2001. Awardees will be determined
and announced on a continual basis subject to the approval of the review
committee.

z. STUDENT SEEKS MATERIAL FOR SURVEY

As a component of the Hewlett Grant, Pam Hernandez needs help from
faculty and staff to survey literature regarding diversity/pluralism in
education and programs that work, plus identify potential guest
speakers, consultants, and to obtain materials (including articles,
audio and video tapes, information about upcoming teleconferences,
books, etc.).  The information will be used to form a resource library
for faculty, staff and students.  Please send all resource information

SECOND CITY RETURNS TO THE ORPHEUM JAN. 12
The Second City brings their "Dysfunctional Holiday Revue" to the
Orpheum Theatre for one performance on Friday, January 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are on sale now at the Orpheum Box Office, 342-2299. Ticket
prices are $15 for reserved seats and $13 for General Admission seats.
This performance is rescheduled from December 16.
