--CAMPUS EVENTS--

1. ART EXHIBIT BY BERRY KLINGMAN
An exhibit of works of art by Berry Klingman will open Friday, September
10 in the Ford Center for the Fine Arts.
 The exhibit, which will be on display through September 29, will
feature prints and drawings by Klingman.
 Klingman is a professor of art at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. A
Galesburg native, he is the son of retired Knox professor Creston
Klingman.

2. KNOX PRESENTS GOSPEL MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Third Annual Knox College Gospel Fest will take place at 7:00 p.m.
Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18 in Harbach Theatre.
Admission is free.
 The concerts are organized by Rev. Tyson Haywood of Gospel Roots
Ministries and sponsored by WVKC 90.7 FM and Allied Blacks for Liberty
and Equality (ABLE). The festival will feature special guests Pastor
E.S. Roberts and the Garfield Park Revelation Choir from Chicago on
Friday and Minister Stanley Daniels and Company from Indianapolis on
Saturday.
 Other scheduled performers include the Umoja Community Gospel Choir,
the Bradley University Gospel Choir from Peoria, soloist and Knox
Admission Counselor Karen Gibbs, and Gospel Jazz Artist Eric Jackson
from Peoria.

3. KNOX ANNOUNCES NEW FACULTY
Knox announces 17 additions to the faculty for the 1999-2000 academic
year. They include three new full-time faculty and 14 visiting faculty.
 Linda C. Bush was appointed assistant professor of chemistry. She
received her M.S. and her Ph.D. from Yale University and her A.B. with
honors in chemistry from Bryn Mawr College. Formerly an assistant
professor at Salisbury State University, Bush will teach organic
chemistry at Knox.
 Beth Ann Fennelly joins the English department as assistant professor
of English with a focus in creative writing and poetry. Fennelly
received her M.F.A. in Creative Writing from University of Arkansas and
her B.A. from University of Notre Dame. Previously, she worked as a
Diane Middlebrook Fellow for the University of Wisconsin Department of
English.
 Thomas R. Mathies was named assistant professor of computer science. He
received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and his B.S. from
University of WisconsinÑLa Crosse. Formerly a visiting assistant
professor at Bucknell University, Mathies specializes in algorithms
software engineering.

4. BRUCE POLAY WINS ASCAP AWARD
 Bruce Polay, professor of music and music director of the
Knox-Galesburg Symphony, has received a 1999-2000 ASCAP Standards Award
from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
 ASCAP Standards Awards are granted by an independent panel and are
based upon the unique prestige value of each writer's catalogue of
original compositions as well as recent performances. Polay has received
the award each year since 1993.

5. ALLISON ARTICLE PUBLISHED; PAPER PRESENTED
Stuart Allison (biology) published an article in the June 1999 issue of
the journal "Wetlands." The article was entitled "The influence of
microhabitat variation on seedling recruitment of _chameacyparis
thyoides_ and _acer rubrum_." It appears in "Wetlands" volume 19, pages
383 to 393.
 Allison also presented a paper at the 84th Annual Meeting of the
Ecological Society of America, held in Spokane, Washington from August 8
to 12. The paper was entitled "Designing a wildlife management plan for
the Knox College campus." The paper was co-authored by Clare Beelman,
'91 (and visiting assistant professor of biology last year) and was
based on a laboratory exercise performed by students during biology 110
in the fall of 1998.

6. CHOCOLATES WIN AWARD
Knox College and Creative Logic (a Peoria graphics design firm that
worked with OCC and the development office) won an "ADDY" award from the
American Advertising Federation for the Knox Now! Logo chocolate favors
distributed at the campaign kick-off dinner last fall. The chocolates
placed in the direct marketing, specialty advertising category.

8. CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY

"Students are expected to attend classes regularly and to participate
fully in class activities. . . .  Instructors may adopt more specific
attendance policies in their courses. It is the student's responsibility
to be familiar with the instructor's policy and to abide by it." (Knox
Catalog, p. 38).

10. INFORMATIONAL MEETING FOR WOMENÕS BASKETBALL
There will be an informational meeting for anyone interested in playing
women's basketball on thursday, september 9 at 8 p.M. The meeting will
be held in the upstairs classroom of the gym. Please contact coach Amy
Fort by phone (x7484) or by email (afort) if you are interested in
attending. Pre-season workouts begin September 13 and all players are
required to do fundraising in the fall.

11. HONORS APPLICATION DEADLINE
Students planning to undertake honors projects should submit their
proposals by the standard deadline, thursday, september 23, to Dean
Bailey (105 om). Application forms may be obtained from either the
Office of the Dean of the College or the Office of the Registrar.
Examples of past proposals that the honors subcommittee thought
exemplary are available from Mrs. Fennig in the Office of the Dean of
the College.

12. WATSON FELLOWSHIP
Knox College is one of fifty colleges nationally to participate in the
Watson Fellowship Program. Knox will be able to nominate four seniors a
year for a fellowship that will allow them to pursue a project of their
own design anywhere in the world. Applications can be picked up in Dean
Bailey's office in Old Main Room 105. Applications are due by Monday,
September 27.

13. MELLON FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION
Eighty-five fellowships will be awarded nationally to outstanding
college seniors applying for admission to Ph.D. programs in the
humanities. Two Knox seniors won Mellon fellowships several years ago,
and one recent Knox graduate won this year. Students interested in more
information should see Mr. Bailey (105 Old Main, extension 7215).
Application forms must be ordered by December 7,

Final deadline for applications is December 21.

14. LANGUAGE FOR KIDS PROGRAM NEEDS INSTRUCTORS
The Galesburg Department of Parks and Recreation and Knox College will
be offering a Language for Kids program this fall, from October 4 to
Novermber 8. Through this program, area children between the ages of 4
and 10 have an opportunity to learn French or Spanish from Knox students
who serve as instructors. Language for Kids is an excellent opportunity
to work with children, use your language skills, and earn some money,
too. If you are
interested in serving as a Spanish or French instructor for the Language
for Kids program, please pick up an application at the Office of the
Dean of Students, and return it to Margot Kinberg (211F GDH, or Campus
Box 118) by 20 September. If you have any questions, please contact
