Photojournalism

Great photojournalism, like all other aspects of journalism, comes from creative imagination, courage, and experience, building on a foundation of theory and technical knowledge. The work you see here comes from Knox photojournalists. Some images were created in response to class assignments; others were taken for publication, for The Knox Student, The Register-Mail, and elsewhere.

Students in my beginning and advanced photography courses learn the essentials—the technology of camera equipment, fundamental skills of shooting and printing, rules of composition, and the basic approaches to creative photography. They then use what they have learned in creative ways, building their expertise and self-confidence through assignments of progressively greater complexity and challenge, analyzed in intense but supportive group critiques.

Knox photojournalists develop their craft in a variety of less formal ways—working for the PR and Sports Information offices, volunteering for The Knox Student or interning with local newspapers, as well as holding other internships at locations around the country. Knox alumni have gone on to careers as highly regarded professional photographers and photojournalists.
