At the end of each term, students will be filling out evaluations of each
of your courses. The evaluations consist of a list of multiple-choice
questions, plus several general questions to which students can write in
responses. There may be other things you would like to know about as
well, tailored more precisely to a particular course. By all means,
write up your own evaluation and give this out to students as well.
If you do this on the same day as the college's evaluations, you'll need
to leave a significant chunk of class time for students to fill them out. Giving
the students class time to write these is essential--you won't get very many
back if you ask students to do them out of class and send them to you.
After you gather up the responses to your individualized questions, put them
aside so that you don't look at them until after the term is over.
It can be even more helpful to solicit student responses to a course early
in the term, when you can actually still make changes in the course in response
to student comments. If doing an evaluation early in the term, ithelpful
to discuss the results with the students.
