TAKE A COLLEAGUE'S CLASS
Goals of the program:
- To enable faculty to pursue new intellectual interests or skills
that
will enhance their teaching and/or research agenda.
- To foster reflection on teaching. Even while the main impetus
for
taking the course will be to learn a new subject area, being a student
in a colleague's class is a prime opportunity to experience teaching in
a new way, and to reflect on one's own practice as well as another's.
It's always possible to sit in on a colleague's
class, but the
time demands of our own teaching usually prohibit a full commitment to
such a course. This new program will enable two or
three faculty a year to take a colleague's class, receiving a
course-release in that term in order to provide time to do all the work
of the class.
Applications will be due by January 30. Applications will be reviewed by the four faculty
members who have been involved in faculty development and the Dean of
the College, with the selection to
be made by February 20.
How it will work:
Preparing the application: Faculty interested in applying will
need to
talk at some length with the instructor of the proposed course, so that
both are convinced there is a good match between interest and
offering. You also will need to discuss plans with your department
chair, whose agreement is needed for the application. Replacement for
your course release through a one-course adjunct hire may be possible;
otherwise the department will have to agree to a one-course loss for
the term. Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss their plans
with me; I will be
happy to look over a draft proposal.
During the course: You are expected to participate fully in the
course,
attending class and doing all assignments and
exams.
After completion of the course: We ask that you and your
instructor
get together to talk about the experience of the course. What have you
learned from being in this colleague's class? What questions do you
have about his/her teaching? To facilitate such discussion, you and
your instructor will be treated to a dinner at a local restaurant of
your choice. You will also be asked to submit a short report on your
experience, due in the first week of the subsequent term.
