Hypnotic
Doug Falk
After writing Doug in Hades last year, I felt a pang of guilt for not writing a
piece for all brass. Chris Rollins and Justin Haynes (reed-players/composers
extraordinaire) had written two great pieces for saxophone quintet and quartet
respectively. Well, my Catholic upbringing causes guilt to fester within me
until I finally do something about it. A day before the Catch submissions
deadline a melody popped into my head on the way to the library. This melody
didn’t have a voice, so I forced myself to imagine the melody in my own family,
the brass. After the initial sketch (I call them sketches, because I don’t deem
them large enough to be considered movements) was completed it was only a short
while before I had written the second. I submitted these sketches to Catch the
following day, but they felt incomplete. The third sketch is kind of chaotic and
arguably not ‘hypnotic’ at all, but it’s fun and I like it.
Trumpet - Brian Marienfeld
