Each ANSO
major engages in a capstone project based on independent field research
during the course of their senior year. Posters of recent senior
research projects are posted in the lobby of the ANSO department in
George Davis Hall.
During
the Fall term of their senior year, students will normally enroll in
ANSO 301, “Methodologies in Sociology and Anthropology.” In this
course, students learn about the various research strategies employed
by anthropologists and sociologists, discuss many of the ethical issues
to be concerned about while conducting their research project, and
start devising their research design and reading literature relevant to
their projects.
During
the Winter term of their senior year, students enroll in ANSO 398,
“Research Design” in which they will complete their research proposal
(which must be reviewed and approved by the Knox Institutional Review
Board), and then start engaging in their actual field research.
Finally,
in the Spring term of their senior year students enroll in ANSO 399
during which they will analyze their data and write up their research
reports in a professional style. Students will also be required
to present their research to the Knox community at large, and to create
a poster to be displayed in the ANSO department.
